Churchtown
and Churchgate are Grade 2 listed cottages situated right in the heart of the
olde-worlde village of Crantock near Newquay. The
full history of the cottages are not known but it is understood that they were
put to many uses over its years including a schoolhouse and poorhouse.
The most well known fact locally is that the building used
to be a bake house for the monastery that stood on the site
of the church. Old bread ovens can be seen in Lanherne Cottage
next door, but unfortunately the ones in Churchtown and Churchgate
broke up during their renovation. One former tenant of Lanherne
Cottage, Mrs Mogridge used to be able to detect the smell
of baking bread late at night, along with several visitors
since. She remembered once being woken up by the smell and
when she went downstairs to investigate, found that her oven,
although switched off, was quite hot, despite the fact that
she had not used it that day!
